<br />
We had so much rain at the beginning of the season and now the temperature is much lower than it should be this time of year. Last year I harvested over 300lbs of tomatoes and this year it will be under 100 I think.<br />
<br />
Everything has been slow to grow. The only thing that seems to be doing well are greens and winter squash.<br />
I just planted some fall crops in 2 waves, hopefully I will have some nice cole crops in a couple of months!<br />

It helps me to easily jot down notes and plans throughout the season. In the beginning of the season it helps to keep track of what is planted when and how seedlings are progressing. When the season is in full force organization slips to the wayside for me. I find it easier to keep the book on my nightstand and just before bed take notes on how the season is progressing.<br />
My journal is a plain lined note book.<br />

The inside is sort of a scribbled mess of sketches, cross outs and misspellings. But this time of year, when I'm planning next years garden the information is so valuable.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Some things I learned this year:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<u>Tomatoes:</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
-Plant tomatoes early to mid March. Last year the plants grew really large in the warm basement.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
-Planted 17 Roma's. Spaced 18" apart in a 4X18" bed, 2 plants wide.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Had an incredible harvest of around 350-400lbs. Next year plant 12-15 plants</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
-Planted 5 Heirloom (2 Principle Borhgese, 2 Black Krim, 1 Mr Stripey). Used a Florida Weave style trellis.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Yield was lower than expected for Black Krim and Stripey. This was partly due to the heat that caused the blossoms to fall off. Next year try more plants and use a cage. Had very high yields of Principle Borhgese. These were a favorite of the birds- add netting and only plant 1 plant next year.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<u>Cucumber:</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
-Don't bother growing cucumbers at the community garden- it is infested with cucumber beetles. Grow them at home instead.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<u>Zucchini:</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
-Plant a crop of Zucchini around the 4th of July to avoid a squash vine borer infestation</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<u>Tomatillo:</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
-Only plant 1 tomatillo plant due to high yield.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<u>Eggplant:</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
-Place a row cover over eggplants in the spring to keep away flea beetles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<u>Ground Cherries</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
-Grow ground cherries at home garden as they were the favorite snack for the field mice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<u>Onions:</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
-Start seeds earlier. Grow at the community garden where there is more sun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<u>Basil:</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
-Grow more... a lot more!</div>

</div>
The year is about to come to an end and as I type this it's just starting to snow outside. For the last week or so as the seed catalogs have started to arrive and I've already started to make plans for this years garden.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi35AQtkyq8F1X-qMXX5zajiLpgXnMkuM4i0PF1AJu0q_tVf_3-XONuTEoOx1iq7EJ1GArMvojcJ2reTZ0JHCl_0zXiSis24Q6NFXXFJimudj22MuplIgYuibjCRNYyhwiCcN5PSVZu3X1S/s1600/DSC00015.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi35AQtkyq8F1X-qMXX5zajiLpgXnMkuM4i0PF1AJu0q_tVf_3-XONuTEoOx1iq7EJ1GArMvojcJ2reTZ0JHCl_0zXiSis24Q6NFXXFJimudj22MuplIgYuibjCRNYyhwiCcN5PSVZu3X1S/s640/DSC00015.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I just started my sweet potato slips. Some of the sweet potatoes in the basement started to sprout, so I put them in water on the windowsill. The slips take a long time to grow, so I figured giving them an early start wouldn't hurt.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr3o6KHpJc7IDxj3l24wnRtK3pKBza4IMxZSvDNUDw28Ku6UZ7Fc8GYZPMknkSAfQPOKSMpu1VputC2chkU7PSn5fQdpBiVIASi3cGw5rracpHxhDGzLsvuEnBqBS4E3FfXtgtroTL5cGk/s1600/DSC00013.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr3o6KHpJc7IDxj3l24wnRtK3pKBza4IMxZSvDNUDw28Ku6UZ7Fc8GYZPMknkSAfQPOKSMpu1VputC2chkU7PSn5fQdpBiVIASi3cGw5rracpHxhDGzLsvuEnBqBS4E3FfXtgtroTL5cGk/s640/DSC00013.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Here is a list of a few garden goals for this new year:<br />
1. Start onions earlier<br />
2. Start tomatoes later<br />
3. Order seeds all at once to save money on shipping<br />
4. Build 2-3 raised beds at the garden plots<br />

I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and I wish you a happy new year!Suburban Gardenesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555985514462862226noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1116759412285258518.post-50291542457050764972012-09-15T05:30:00.001-07:002012-09-15T05:30:48.922-07:00The State of the Plots in Mid SeptemberHere we are in mid September already and I'm wondering how the summer flew by so quickly. In mid-summer I took on a big project at work that left me little time for anything but work and canning tomatoes. I did manage to have a fun and relaxing vacation in Martha's Vineyard in August and several day trips. Having grown up in New England I never truly feel like it's summer until I dip my toes into the ocean.<br />

Summer for me is days at the beach, swimming, walks in the woods, the smell of a campfire, road trips, relaxing days with breezes blowing through the open windows and of course gardening.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC1u75-m2x8Gf3vhJZjTbNCJAWHSs7ydM-FIUDsuGAQb-GwaoWARSu9KwmNzUAPkfAqzjpjFNprIW4_PBAcDTg618cVaU1uDp1BrmYsBjRD7fJ10NoSJtydydRa4FebZtKKF6b4cmGvUAk/s1600/DSCF9269.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjC1u75-m2x8Gf3vhJZjTbNCJAWHSs7ydM-FIUDsuGAQb-GwaoWARSu9KwmNzUAPkfAqzjpjFNprIW4_PBAcDTg618cVaU1uDp1BrmYsBjRD7fJ10NoSJtydydRa4FebZtKKF6b4cmGvUAk/s640/DSCF9269.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This summer the garden did very well and provided me with fresh produce to eat as well as lots of extra to preserve and fill the pantry. I had to battle all kinds of bugs that I had never seen or dealt with before in my home garden. Next year I will be better prepared now that I know what to expect.<br />
<br />
The biggest pests were cucumber beetles, even a row cover didn't seem to help. Those buggers crawl under anything. Second place went to field mice; they would take bites out of the tomatoes as soon as they started to turn red. Third place went to the squash bugs that took out my pumpkin plants just after they set fruit.<br />
<br />
The tomato plants got what appeared late blight at the end of August. I clipped off all of the dead and leaves and began treatments of copper fungicide. Most of the plants survived but were never the same. There are still lots of small green tomatoes, but the plants will be pulled this week to make room for fall crops or a cover crop.<br />
<br />
Here are some pictures from the community garden plot in early September. The corn was planted on July 15th. I wondered if it would be too late, but I harvested all of the ears this week. I will let the stalks to dry and use them for Halloween decorations on the front of our house.<br />
<br />

<br />
Borers took out my early planted zucchini but a second planting in early July has provided zucchini through summer. The plant is still setting fruit.<br />
<br />

The mice ate most of my bush dry beans, but the dry pole beans have remained untouched. Next year I'll plant more of them.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So far the Roma's have been very productive. I have 17 plants and so far I've harvested 350+ tomatoes. Some were picked just under-ripe so that the mice didn't eat them first. I just let them ripen on the windowsill... until that filled up...</div>

<span style="background-color: white; text-align: left;">It's not quite the same as letting them ripen on the vine but once they are canned I don't notice much of a difference. I'm hoping to get at least 12+ jars of whole tomatoes and then some sauce and tomato jam out of the total harvest. So far I have only 4 qts of whole tomatoes, so there's still a long way to go.</span>Suburban Gardenesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555985514462862226noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1116759412285258518.post-77294851857350927352012-07-16T04:05:00.000-07:002012-07-16T04:13:22.230-07:00Harvest Monday...And Let the Canning Begin!Last week I harvested quite a few tomatoes and tomatillos. A total of 11lbs of plum tomatoes and 4lbs of tomatillos.<br />

JR made some delicious bruschetta and I canned the rest whole. From the tomatillos I made a batch of salsa verde. The salsa verde came out a little too tart, the canning recipe called for a whole cup of vinegar or lime juice. So I'm going to use it as a chicken or fish marinade. In the future I will use less acid and eat it fresh or freeze the tomatillos. I also dried some of the Principle Borghese tomatoes.</div>

When I went to the garden each evening I noticed tomatoes with bite marks on them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKS3h9fWld1skoLkXxJPQzEl7LszIQgCakWwTc4-uSdqr_2fIOwjsnuT1OMYtJa6tRyxgVn7KQpI2mr3gSY3j9BFxhay4J7WBWZcDH7r4-o5_BQ3fS97spzd_bp3bpGFINXgbiUZcviS_m/s1600/DSCF9246.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKS3h9fWld1skoLkXxJPQzEl7LszIQgCakWwTc4-uSdqr_2fIOwjsnuT1OMYtJa6tRyxgVn7KQpI2mr3gSY3j9BFxhay4J7WBWZcDH7r4-o5_BQ3fS97spzd_bp3bpGFINXgbiUZcviS_m/s640/DSCF9246.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I've seen field mice at the plots so I think it was them snacking on the tomatoes (YUCK!!).<br />
Needless to say they went into the compost pile. I've had to start picking the tomatoes a little under-ripe so that I'll actually get some for myself.<br />
<br />
Other bad news: I had to pull the pumpkin plants. The leaves quickly became yellow and brown and wilted. I wanted to get the diseased plant out of the garden as quickly as possible. I'll have to try pumpkins again next year.<br />

I've made some nice progress with the second plot despite the heat. 3 beds have been created, 1 more needs to be made. I planted corn, beans and cantaloupe in the first bed. The second 2 beds were planted with a cover crop. They will be used to grow fall veggies. The sunflower in bed 3 had self seeded and I didn't have the heart to pull it up. </div>

There has been very little rain as well, so I've been trying to pay close attention to water needs in the garden.<br />

The tomatoes, peppers and watermelon are loving the heat. I definitely think the plastic and salt hay mulches are helping to keep the ground moist. Below are the Black Krim tomatoes:</div>

I'm still trying to figure out how to tell if the watermelon is ready to pick. I've read that when you tap a ripe fruit it will have more of a solid "thump" sound vs. the hollow sound when you tap an under-ripe fruit. They all sound the same to me right now so I'm waiting to pick the big one.</div>

I was worried about the eggplants. They had tons of flowers, but the flowers were dropping and not producing fruit. Eggplants require 2" of water a week vs. the 1" that tomatoes require. I increased the how much water they were getting and now there are lots of little baby fruits on all of the plants!</div>

The gardens are open to tour only 3 days of the year.<br />

W. Atlee Burpee and his family used the cottage on the farm as a weekend residence. The farm also served as the company's test garden for plants. Many plant varieties and hybrids were developed on the farm. <br />
While walking through the kitchen garden I tried to take note of the various trellises that they were using for plants.<br />
They used these red cages for almost all of their tomatoes:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I did manage to get the fence up around the new plot.<br />
We are in the middle of a heat wave, so I went to the plot before work this morning to water everything.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The amaranth is growing well at the plot, but the leaves are still being eaten by some kind of pest, maybe flea beetles? The amaranth growing in the home garden has no pest problems. I tried some in a stir fry tonight and I like the taste. Some compare it to spinach, but to me it has a stronger herbal flavor.</div>

I need to get better about documenting my harvests. I've started a notebook to keep track when I don't have time to jump on the computer. This week I've picked various herbs, kale, some baby carrots and a couple gherkin cucumbers. This weekend I'm planning to plant corn, beans, and pickle cucumbers.</div>Suburban Gardenesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555985514462862226noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1116759412285258518.post-50191735618289623802012-06-10T05:12:00.001-07:002012-06-10T05:12:28.727-07:00Community Garden Plot in Early June<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I'm expanding my community garden growing area to include a second plot. We're in the second week of June and the gardener's on either side of me haven't started gardening. I mentioned that I was interested in more space if it became available. This week I was told I could use one of the plots next to my currant one. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is my new plot! You can see that the grass and weeds were starting to take over:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWZtUvFUswC4xbH1sQ3lkBCAel-CGcgsAl0JkHNl6HwIpPZf-jpsNE6xP56DJzqiWXG0UVBc7DY6PdGqJpquEg-BkIqGkFXa9MLcUkQ2MZabZ1d7UArz9SxTz8IQe5ATJo-YMIS60tf5LW/s1600/plot+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWZtUvFUswC4xbH1sQ3lkBCAel-CGcgsAl0JkHNl6HwIpPZf-jpsNE6xP56DJzqiWXG0UVBc7DY6PdGqJpquEg-BkIqGkFXa9MLcUkQ2MZabZ1d7UArz9SxTz8IQe5ATJo-YMIS60tf5LW/s640/plot+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wanted to pull as many weeds as possible while the ground was still moist from all of the rain that we've been getting. I've noticed that the soil gets pretty hard when it dries out. Some of the weeds were vines and thistle, so I'm going back and breaking up the soil with a fork to remove all of the white roots. My first plot is the one you see on the right. That's my mom you see in the plot helping me weed the beds. She's been such a great help.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's much more difficult to put up fencing now that the weather is getting hot. We managed to get up the front and side fence. I'm going to take down the fence in between my plots and reuse it in the back of plot 2.</div>

<br />
The picture above is after 2 days of weeding. I'm going over to the garden this morning to pull up the rest.<br />
<br />
Having 2 plots will be the perfect amount of space for my needs. I want to be able to rotate crops and also have room for fruit and asparagus.<br />
The total size of the plots combined is approximately 40'X24'.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today I harvested some Swiss Chard, Kale, Peas and a few green onions.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The peas are starting to be pulled to make way for cucumbers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Cucumber beetles are everywhere at the community garden plot, so I need to make room for them at home. <br />
<br />
I'm very happy to report that I will be getting a second garden plot! It will be the plot to the left of my current plot. I was over there pulling weeds tonight. Tomorrow morning I want to get the fence up and the rest of the weeds out. I plan to plant beans there and I'm not sure what else yet.
<br />
<br />
I will take some pictures of the plot tomorrow. I have so many things to take there when I go over to work that somehow my camera keeps getting forgotten.<br />
<br />

I'm only growing 1 pot this year. I love potatoes but I try not to eat to many, so they'll be a nice little treat when they're ready.<br />

One of which was to paint the garage.<br />
Last summer we built a shed onto the back of the garage so I could turn the garage into a art studio.<br />
This is what the garage looked like when we moved into the house:<br />

This was the second time we've been there, the food is excellent (Tapas and awesome wine selection).<br />
<br />
Today I worked on reshaping and creating a stone border for the front flower bed.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEbM7vJiIbE0XUzw626KTSnJ5KW-5Qt0yUmmcvp87dXJZ8yKJRvGCaFnNQoHp_OxLi2VkPbyzd8u1vqc7YOxNr6LFfnSqTztD_BtzDlqBPw2KRIGrzpMFC7JQRk-4JgvBGHc8GqSuLc02f/s1600/DSCF9024.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEbM7vJiIbE0XUzw626KTSnJ5KW-5Qt0yUmmcvp87dXJZ8yKJRvGCaFnNQoHp_OxLi2VkPbyzd8u1vqc7YOxNr6LFfnSqTztD_BtzDlqBPw2KRIGrzpMFC7JQRk-4JgvBGHc8GqSuLc02f/s640/DSCF9024.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Last year we had some really ugly overgrown juniper bushes removed. I built the lattice that you see, there was nothing there before and I planted annuals. The stone matches a border that is along the fence by the roses.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghX_FvauKGzaU_ITZU6dqrinZ_XjoDsW4K4tmMD9hrSpGK8fFwbTP_juPBMrHg2cBycKMAyWCRhJn_-UP_jNMW-TamsrKsmBt2iUjoyXgYC9n13D8VmDUA_kNPKA0ezIq-82fEAnCfESX-/s1600/DSCF9025.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="500" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghX_FvauKGzaU_ITZU6dqrinZ_XjoDsW4K4tmMD9hrSpGK8fFwbTP_juPBMrHg2cBycKMAyWCRhJn_-UP_jNMW-TamsrKsmBt2iUjoyXgYC9n13D8VmDUA_kNPKA0ezIq-82fEAnCfESX-/s640/DSCF9025.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I still need to remove the grass in the bed, but that will wait until tomorrow.<br />
The plants that you see toward the back are Cleome or "Spider Flower" that self seeded from last years garden. They've already been thinned out twice but keep sprouting! I'm going to reduce them down to a handful of plants. They get really big and topple over by the end of the summer if I don't stake them.<br />
<br />
And lookie here, my pansies in the flower box (grown from seed) finally decided to bloom:<br />
<br />

It was supposed to rain all day but I lucked out and it even got a little sunny this afternoon.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE03Mk2isVjaP_Xr9g5r6M-5mX28EebXZTUgt_rhgyBma23bapl0a7o-TPggzcP0aKAtaP60y7xNnCsq6bqnwWKqWS85S6rL9hAkVwPN4tHBmQ_IQ0QQgyWWoXLgHpjWESEuPprMui8da5/s1600/tom+row+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE03Mk2isVjaP_Xr9g5r6M-5mX28EebXZTUgt_rhgyBma23bapl0a7o-TPggzcP0aKAtaP60y7xNnCsq6bqnwWKqWS85S6rL9hAkVwPN4tHBmQ_IQ0QQgyWWoXLgHpjWESEuPprMui8da5/s640/tom+row+1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Most of my time was spend weeding. Some of the weeds and grass are easy to pull, but because the area was tilled I'm having to dig up thistle everywhere. Thistle can create multiple plants when the root is cut up. If you don't dig out all of the root you will never get rid of the thistle. I've had to pull up sections of the red mulch to weed under it. Some light gets through and causes the weeds to grow under it. I'm trying to decide if I should pull up the plastic and mulch with straw or keep it down and keep weeding underneath. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

One of the red amaranth was planted here at the plot, the other was planted at the home garden. Something is eating the leaves. I think maybe slugs. I've found them all over the plot.</div>

I had big plans to use an old wooden ladder for my beans, then I went to look for it and remembered I thew it out when I moved (grrr!). So I used some branches that fell from our oak tree over the winter to build a tee pee. To the right of it is a butternut squash plant.</div>

Towards the end of the day as it was getting dark I planted some cucumber and bean seeds. I still have one 4X4" bed to plant and a trellis to put up, after that all of my planting at the plot will be done (for now anyways)!</div>Suburban Gardenesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555985514462862226noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1116759412285258518.post-72327696443156946412012-05-21T16:07:00.002-07:002012-05-21T16:07:33.118-07:00Late May at the Morris ArboretumYesterday was a day to take it easy and enjoy the nice weather. I took a short drive to the Morris Arboretum to see what was growing and blooming.<br />

It's my birthday next Thursday so I decided to take the week off to catch up on some projects and gardening.<br />
<br />
I've been eating fresh sugar snap peas almost every night this week. I've been able to harvest about a handful at a time. Just enough to dip in some cilantro & chive yogurt dip as a snack with a glass of wine before dinner.<br />
<br />
No pictures today, but I'm sure there will be lots of posting this week!<br />
<br />Suburban Gardenesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555985514462862226noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1116759412285258518.post-17009651538115460872012-05-15T03:38:00.000-07:002012-05-15T03:38:15.125-07:00Well Hello Mr. Stripey, Welcome to My GardenI have no willpower.<br />
<br />
I planted 17 Romas, 1 Black Krim and 4 Principle Borghese tomato plants in my community garden plot last week. These were all plants that I had grown from seed. I still have 2 bush tomatoes that will go in containers or the home garden. I had no reason to buy another plant, but this variety had been calling out to me ever since I saw the heirloom plants arrive in the store.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwomMbgV_BT-zDrES22ansxx1LTauhNc1bHYWTksGCSIDRtqxZLcwhnznjhqF9ydJO5LM0dX4mCYjAQUEA9O9qSK1l9TVyAkDy4R8Hj8Brb2Rn3RBJjm2oSSd0oefcYYS6a7urlY2ZmqQq/s1600/DSCF8948.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjwomMbgV_BT-zDrES22ansxx1LTauhNc1bHYWTksGCSIDRtqxZLcwhnznjhqF9ydJO5LM0dX4mCYjAQUEA9O9qSK1l9TVyAkDy4R8Hj8Brb2Rn3RBJjm2oSSd0oefcYYS6a7urlY2ZmqQq/s640/DSCF8948.JPG" width="572" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
You see, one of my Black Krim plants stem broke during transport to the community garden...so....well...it gave me an excuse to buy it! Also, because it's an heirloom I'll be able to save the seeds for future years. So you see, it's also an investment. </div>

Planting happened a little earlier than usual because of the great forecast.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMv6aWtEg4XfPRyHukiebXn-yZrYy65Z7P5t_yVk0ujCHH3LhrSwsnbvkqtMsmQGlNemAPLrHlbu3S4MAroIyfKHwHbX7q6TTJeRheMvaE2o1ahUpKTsNOM1txgV2r_c6Chl9sHSwZQ8Cz/s1600/DSCF8941.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="462" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMv6aWtEg4XfPRyHukiebXn-yZrYy65Z7P5t_yVk0ujCHH3LhrSwsnbvkqtMsmQGlNemAPLrHlbu3S4MAroIyfKHwHbX7q6TTJeRheMvaE2o1ahUpKTsNOM1txgV2r_c6Chl9sHSwZQ8Cz/s640/DSCF8941.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I'm trying out red plastic mulch for the first time. I really don't want to spend the hot month of August weeding in the sun so hopefully this will help and an added benefit would be if it increases fruit yield.<br />
I only was able to plant half of the Romas, the other half will get planted later in the week.<br />
<br />
The bed with the straw mulch was planted with ground cherries, peppers and tomatillos.<br />
The bed in between will have squash and the front bed will have eggplants. I'm still figuring out what will go in the side bed and the back bed. Probably beans and maybe corn or sunflowers. It's tricky this first year because I need to figure out how the sun will move across the plot in the summer. I'm surprised that the neighbors on either side of me have not shown up or put up their fencing. I know it's still early, but I'm always so eager to get started.<br />
<br />
It's supposed to rain until Thursday so I won't be able to work over there until then.<br />
<br />
In the home veggie patch the peas are starting to form:<br />

This is the time of year when I wish I could take a week off of work just to spend time planting. The weekends never seem long enough!Suburban Gardenesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17555985514462862226noreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1116759412285258518.post-54601120844117118462012-05-02T04:35:00.002-07:002012-05-02T04:35:54.324-07:00Cauliflower and Blooming PeasWhen I came home from work tonight I took a walk around the garden and noticed the peas were blooming!<br />
These are the sugar snap peas. I also planted 2 types of shelling peas which are not blooming yet.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The broccoli and cauliflower have been under a row cover for a few days because of the freeze warnings this week. It looks like most of the broccoli has buttoned due to the temperature changes, but the cauliflower is growing nicely. Next year I'll wait longer to plant broccoli.</div>

<br />
Also growing well is the Napa cabbage, but I'm a little concerned about cabbage worms as I've picked 10 off of my Pak Choi so far. I think I need to invest in some insect netting.<br />

It's been another 2 weeks since I last posted about my pepper seedlings that were <a href="http://suburbangardeness.blogspot.com/2012/04/pepper-seedlings-turning-yellow-update.html">turning yellow with purple spots</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWSKA5STCQ_p8kQG2izemp7g9PZPtuV8gTIzX9MsPnRQ9BvxpAPuNBWKvHKKYpc2kK42p5WkBxPzJYALMzTCo9BTrsl5Uqg_ZE-W66yUJHp3CV8gnU0FWrmwGCw8nlWaqTlcuYalenNxed/s1600/DSCF8928.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="566" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWSKA5STCQ_p8kQG2izemp7g9PZPtuV8gTIzX9MsPnRQ9BvxpAPuNBWKvHKKYpc2kK42p5WkBxPzJYALMzTCo9BTrsl5Uqg_ZE-W66yUJHp3CV8gnU0FWrmwGCw8nlWaqTlcuYalenNxed/s640/DSCF8928.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I haven't done much of anything since transplanting the remaining peppers. I let the soil dry out before bottom watering with non-chlorinated water. I haven't fed them for 2 weeks, so today I gave them some liquid kelp before setting them out onto the porch to harden off.<br />
<br />
As you can see they are growing nicely and have regained their leaves and green color! They're not as full as they normally would be but I'm very happy with the progress that they've made.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhImjNWnAhqonchwkMbGcFvU47K1ImkX6D9UOrnK2RGy_Kcorq-315VJCKAshE8snHAjNLEmFK6onBNihs6qDFqZVPFhTBGT3AkvNDE7qzVb7qkU6fY-nKS39qo9PJ7pa9STrEdHoedprDk/s1600/DSCF8927.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="414" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhImjNWnAhqonchwkMbGcFvU47K1ImkX6D9UOrnK2RGy_Kcorq-315VJCKAshE8snHAjNLEmFK6onBNihs6qDFqZVPFhTBGT3AkvNDE7qzVb7qkU6fY-nKS39qo9PJ7pa9STrEdHoedprDk/s640/DSCF8927.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The plant on the bottom right in the above image is a pepper that was planted 3 weeks later and did not have any problems. You can see that it's fuller, darker green and almost the same size as the "problem" plants.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The 10 day weather forecast is looking great for planting with temperatures in the 70's during the day and 50's at night. But the peppers will not go in the ground for another couple of weeks. They'll spend their time on the front porch and sun porch hardening off until then. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today I also started to harden off some other plants. Here are the eggplants:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBEYzkSXTXabu-VKYeqWkQ6CHShU7_P9fOB-qb7HjErWZ7XkrQAShHtX72XU3rK3ssd3zo1n5fYFxXLIVoH-newL2fQ0a0FiIQUCR-G_08nBj6qkiPdV8u02mv8MFVdVQvjOOSfW3Fa2ry/s1600/DSCF8926.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="438" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBEYzkSXTXabu-VKYeqWkQ6CHShU7_P9fOB-qb7HjErWZ7XkrQAShHtX72XU3rK3ssd3zo1n5fYFxXLIVoH-newL2fQ0a0FiIQUCR-G_08nBj6qkiPdV8u02mv8MFVdVQvjOOSfW3Fa2ry/s640/DSCF8926.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are 7 total, the 4 smaller ones are toward the back, hidden by the larger ones.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are the amaranth, cucumbers and zinnias:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbsVtww-C-NNE-1pHVEwFF_rWwrInvsR-XjFAvJsvAtCHMMuqVxsCSCTRXpTISzCbGRxBcWUilym4X7zAyAnbqa4mu9fiHY1S7_7XL9lUx0SWgEi2bvQqwICzSZa7AlK5BCZ2Mgh3VzWi7/s1600/DSCF8925.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="404" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbsVtww-C-NNE-1pHVEwFF_rWwrInvsR-XjFAvJsvAtCHMMuqVxsCSCTRXpTISzCbGRxBcWUilym4X7zAyAnbqa4mu9fiHY1S7_7XL9lUx0SWgEi2bvQqwICzSZa7AlK5BCZ2Mgh3VzWi7/s640/DSCF8925.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
And some petunias and lettuce that are ready to be planted:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBUa_JI7xeoReZ_VQ8HPJr0efKpHQHHsVWhrwYNis5kPERAtEEPyhlAMORo3NSRSx12O-bEzlRvaWSTng3AJwp29vQWbPgY9ollfwYusSRnr1OyqxMjW5ttVgcTra3s-WzyM9hhqi53n3J/s1600/DSCF8931.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="492" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBUa_JI7xeoReZ_VQ8HPJr0efKpHQHHsVWhrwYNis5kPERAtEEPyhlAMORo3NSRSx12O-bEzlRvaWSTng3AJwp29vQWbPgY9ollfwYusSRnr1OyqxMjW5ttVgcTra3s-WzyM9hhqi53n3J/s640/DSCF8931.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Moving all of these plants outside will make a lot more room under the grow lights. Still inside are squash, melons, sunflowers, more herbs, lettuce, zinnias and amaranth.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This weekend I'm hoping to plant the larger tomato plants, but it depends on the forecast. If the temperatures remain in the 50's at night I'll go for it. If after planting the temperature drops lower I'll cover them with a row cover. Some of the plants are getting so big that they really need to be in the ground soon.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I also constructed the frame for the garden gate.<br />
<div>
I'll be building the gate itself this week and will install it next weekend.</div>
