Tomatoes, Tomatoes,Tomatoes...

Tomatoes...and more tomatoes! Not a bad problem to have if you ask me.

So far the Roma's have been very productive. I have 17 plants and so far I've harvested 350+ tomatoes. Some were picked just under-ripe so that the mice didn't eat them first. I just let them ripen on the windowsill... until that filled up...

and the windowsill in the kitchen filled up, now they've spread onto the buffet table.

It's not quite the same as letting them ripen on the vine but once they are canned I don't notice much of a difference. I'm hoping to get at least 12+ jars of whole tomatoes and then some sauce and tomato jam out of the total harvest. So far I have only 4 qts of whole tomatoes, so there's still a long way to go.

  1. WOW! Thats alot of Roma tomatoes so congratulations on a wonderful tomato season! I only planted few of them and they're not as good producers as I hoped for. Plus most of my paste varieties have BER.

  2. Jenny, I'm thrilled! I didn't know what to expect with all of the strange weather that we've had this year and also growing in a new place. I think that using a soaker hose to water the plants has really helped. I just let it run when I'm doing other chores. I'm also wondering if the red plastic mulch helped increase pollination. There are still tons of green tomatoes on the plants. I did get a few here and there with BER but I just picked them off and it didn't seem to effect the others (so far).

  4. That is a lot of tomatoes! I am picking quite a few of mine not quite ripe this year also trying to ward off blossom end rot! I did see a little mouse in the garden area today! Nancy
