It's been a month an a half since I started the sweet potato slips. In the last week they've really been taking off. I was worried for a while that I wouldn't have any slips in time for planting this year.
The one on the right has 5 vines growing the one on the left only 1. But both have more eyes starting to poke out.
Hopefully now that the vines have grown, the leaves will open quickly and I'll be able to root the vines in time.
I'm hoping to have 4-5 slips. They're going into the new plot but I also plan grow one in a container on the driveway (if I get enough vines to grow.) I e-mailed the person in charge of the Community Garden and we're just waiting for the farmer to fit plowing into his schedule.
Beautiful pictures & beautiful blog! I read in another blog that you can eat sweet potato leaves as well. I would like to grow sweet potatoes someday too. In what size container can you grow sweet potato? This might be fun to do next year!
Thank you :) I never heard about eating the leaves I'll have to try them. They can be grown in 12" containers, but I plan to put them in a 18" container or a half barrel.
Very nice! I haven't tried planting sweet potatoe yet but maybe I'll buy one plant and see how it does.
ReplyDeleteThe tough part around here is finding plants/slips. By mail order you typically need to order 25 slips and I don't have the space for that many!
DeleteI have yet to try growing them. Definitely on the list for next year.
